Dr. Darrin Germann, DC, FRCCSS(C), BSc (Hons)

Sports Specialist Chiropractor

After receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree (Honours) in Kinesiology at Queen’s University, Dr. Germann went on to graduate from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) and completed an additional two-year post-graduate residency to become a fellow of the Royal College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences (Canada). Dr. Germann has conducted research focused on sport-related concussion and mild-traumatic brain injury, and he has worked on collaborative projects with the Centre for Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation through the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ontario Tech University. He has also travelled abroad to present his prior research at the international World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) 2019 Congress in Berlin, Germany. Dr. Germann has worked numerous sporting events including the Fencing PanAm Games, the Toronto Triathlon, provincial taekwondo championships, and several national-level events in soccer, mountain biking, and wakeboarding. He also served as the team chiropractor for the Toronto Rush and worked with professional hockey players as part of an inter-disciplinary medical team for NHL training camps. Dr. Germann holds a full-time practice directing both the chiropractic and performance nutrition departments in an inter-disciplinary sports medicine and performance training center in Toronto, Ontario where he has had the opportunity to work with Olympic, NHL, NBA, NFL, CFL and PGA athletes. His nutritional coaching programs primarily focus on the improvement of body composition and physique as well as facilitating athletic performance and recovery.

Dr. Ayla Azad, DC, MBA

CCA CEO

Dr. Azad graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic (USA) and completed her Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) degree from Athabasca University. Dr. Azad was in private practice at Total Rehab, a multi-disciplinary rehab clinic in Ajax, Ontario from 1999 to 2020. During that time, she was also teaching at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in the Chiropractic Therapeutics, Principles and Practice and Clinical Education Departments. Dr. Azad has served on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Chiropractic Association, serving as President and Chair of the Board from 2015 to 2017, and has served on the Board for the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation and the World Federation of Chiropractic. Dr. Azad began working at the Canadian Chiropractic Association, in 2020 and is currently the Chief Executive Officer.

Dr. James J. Young, DC

Dr. James J. Young is a is a chiropractor and the Postdoctoral Fellow in Integrated Arthritis Care in the Schroeder Arthritis Institute at the University Health Network. He is also a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for Muscle and Joint Health at the University of Southern Denmark and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Research Partnerships and Health Policy at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. He currently holds funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Arthritis Society Canada for his work on integrated surgical and non-surgical care for knee and hip osteoarthritis and has published extensively on back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders.

Dr. Shawn Thistle, DC

Dr. Thistle is a chiropractor, educator, speaker, knowledge transfer leader and medico-legal consultant. He graduated from CMCC in 2004 and until 2016, he practiced in a multidisciplinary clinic in Toronto. In 2006, he founded RRS Education (www.rrseducation.com), which offers evidence-based continuing education options for chiropractors including weekly Research Reviews, Online Courses and Seminars. RRS Education helps busy chiropractors stay on top of new information, giving them understandable, applicable, unbiased analysis of the latest literature to optimize patient care.

Dr. Maathavan Thillai, DC, C Ped Tech, BSc(hons)

Dr. Maat received his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto in 2016. In order to broaden his lower extremity (hip, knee, ankle & foot) assessment, diagnosis and treatment skills, Dr. Thillai has also completed his Certified Pedorthic Technician designation (C Ped. Tech) dealing with lower limb care including custom-made orthotics and knee and ankle bracing. Dr. Thillai is an advocate for interdisciplinary health care and uses evidence-based practices in managing his patients across his four active GTA practices. He works in conjunction with the treating clinicians and therapists to provide their patients with orthopedic product assessment and education to aid in optimizing patient health and to facilitate normal movement and function of the body’s muscles and joints.

Shannon DeLenardo

CLHIA Director, Anti-Fraud and Electronic Claims

Shannon is Director, Anti-Fraud and Electronic Claims with the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA), a voluntary trade association with member companies that account for 99 percent of Canada's life and health insurance business. She is responsible for building consensus on concerns important to member companies and for leading industry committees, working groups and projects related to the mitigation of benefits fraud, and electronic claims management. Shannon has held positions in Compliance, Regulatory Affairs, and Privacy with CAA Club Group and Orion Travel Insurance. She has also held roles at Assurant Solutions including Director of Compliance and Director of Human Resources.

Shannon est directrice des mesures antifraudes et des demandes en ligne à l’Association canadienne des compagnies d’assurances de personnes (ACCAP), une association bénévole dont les sociétés membres représentent 99 % des activités d’assurance-vie et d’assurance-maladie au Canada. Elle est responsable non seulement d’établir un consensus sur les questions qui sont pertinentes pour les sociétés membres, mais aussi de diriger les comités de l’industrie, les groupes de travail et les projets liés à la réduction des réclamations frauduleuses et à la gestion des demandes en ligne. Shannon a occupé des postes dans les domaines de la conformité, des affaires réglementaires et de la protection de la vie privée à CAA Club Group et à Assurance Voyage Orion. Elle a aussi travaillé à Assurant Solutions, notamment en tant que directrice de la conformité et directrice des ressources humaines.
