This session will cover the chiropractic assessment of the neonate, generally considered to be 0-8 weeks of age. The case history elicited from a parent or legal guardian will be offered and reviewed, followed by an overview of the chiropractic examination, specific to the presenting complaint or referral, and informed consent for examination.

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Elicit a case history specific to a neonate patient. 
  • Perform a chiropractic and related physical examination of the neonate, specific to the presenting concerns and/or referral. This will be offered within the purview of the NMSK model of evaluation, both evidence-informed and based. 
  • Explore referral considerations and mechanisms to allopathic health providers.

Instructors

Dr. Judy Forrester, DC

CCA Board Chair

Dr. Judy Forrester has practiced as a Doctor of Chiropractic since 1978. Since graduating from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College with the President’s Graduate of the Year Award she has practiced in both San Francisco, California and Calgary, Alberta. Dr. Forrester is the co-author of Pediatric Chiropractic, a textbook published by Williams and Wilkins (now Wolters Kluwer) in 1998, 3rd edition 2023. She has also edited and authored numerous professional publications in prenatal and pediatric chiropractic. Dr. Forrester is the founder of a large multidisciplinary health centre in northwest Calgary, Synergea Family Health Centre, which houses diverse healthcare practitioners working in a collaborative care model. Synergea Family Health Centre focuses on family, patient-centred, community-based, and integrative care, and has a mandate to respect individual choices in healthcare. Dr. Forrester has also served on the council of the Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors and the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation.

Dr. Crystal Draper, DC

CCA Senior Manager of Professional Practice

Dr. Draper is the Senior Manager of Professional Practice at the Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA). She holds a Bachelor of Arts and Science Degree in Human Kinetics and Developmental Psychology from the University of Guelph and is a graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC). In addition to her work at the CCA, she practices downtown Toronto at a family-based interdisciplinary clinic, focusing on pregnancy and postpartum care. Before joining the CCA, Dr. Draper was a faculty member and course coordinator for Clinical Diagnosis and Female Care and taught within the Chiropractic Techniques and Chiropractic Principles departments at CMCC. She has a number of peer-reviewed journal articles and has presented research at various conferences.
